im going to come out and say it: isolating is a self-destructive behavior. it might not be as obvious and immediately self-destructive as say, impulsive spending, drug use or risky behaviors, but it gradually decays relationships and can deepen your mental health issues. often, our impulse is to retreat from others and responsibilities for “self care” or to “work on ourselves” and obviously sometimes we need mental health breaks, but there’s a line you cross from “taking a break” to full on neglecting your relationships with others and your social needs that can be incredibly damaging to yourself and others over time

I didn’t want to disrupt the post about hostile architecture I saw because it’s true that the main target is homeless people but I did want to mention that this architecture also hurts people who aren’t skinny. I want to preface this all by saying I am in no way trying to minimize how this impacts people experiencing homelessness I am just trying to add on to the discussion of how these are bad.

image

You think that someone who can’t fit into those weird little yellow seats is going to feel comfortable? No. It will only make them feel bad or excluded.

image

Look at this shit. It’s not good or nice.

image

It only adds to the ways fat people are made feel unwelcome and though we already needed to tear this shit down because it makes life a million times worse for people experiencing homelessness and so this isn’t saying this is why you should tear it down. It is saying that our society is fatphobic and that sucks.

This isn’t a side effect, hostile architecture is designed to drive EVERYONE who’s “undesirable” from public spaces. Homeless people are the biggest targets but also disabled people, fat people, elderly people, etc. Other things, like anti-“loitering” measures and increased presence of police and security, drive out even more people, especially people of color and teenagers.

You aren’t disrupting or derailing discussions by talking about your experiences, we NEED to talk about the ways that different kinds of people are declared “unwanted” and pushed out of society.

Yeah, we no longer have “ugly laws” on paper, but in practice and architecture, we still absolutely do. If anything, we’ve gotten worse and more hostile towards “ugly” (unhoused, disabled, fat, etc) people in the past ten years- and this is exacerbated in the USA especially by the way communities are built to be car-dependent and segregated by class and race.

UPDATE 08/19: i’ve got a job, an eviction notice, and a little over $1000 left to go on the fundraiser! with even the smallest donations adding up, i’m closer than ever to being safe—my due date is the end of sept. 10th!

hey tumblr! did you know i have an emergency gofundme running to help me keep my housing while i desperately look for work, keep my fingies crossed about my SSDI case, and do everything i can to stay alive?

(bestie, did my fun graphic work?)

well, now you know! long story much shorter than i usually tell it, but i’ve run through all the charities in my area and no one wants to help me out since i don’t have any kids! i can’t qualify for a traditional loan or i would have taken it already! i don’t have anyone who could take me in if i lost my apartment and my big city has no shelter space! i also really need stability so i can do things like hold a job down and get my life back in order and go to therapy and medical appointments! i have surgery in october and dang, it’s even my birthday soon!

so hit that gofundme link up there and check it out! or click this one again here if you don’t wanna scroll up! or you can also help via paypal or cashapp! most importantly, you could help by reblogging this post to spread the word, because you guys are my last line of defense this month! thanks so much!

i mean this in the gentlest way possible: you need to eat vegetables. you need to become comfortable with doing so. i do not care if you are a picky eater because of autism (hi, i used to be this person!), you need to find at least some vegetables you can eat. find a different way to prepare them. chances are you would like a vegetable you hate if you prepared it in a stew or roasted it with seasoning or included it as an ingredient in a recipe. just. please start eating better. potatoes and corn are not sufficient vegetables for a healthy diet.

Need it to be easier?

  • baby carrots (good dipped in ranch)
  • Celery sticks (add some peanut butter or cream cheese for extra flavor and protein)
  • Broccoli (good with ranch, cheese, or salt/pepper/butter)
  • Canned peas (you can microwave in a microwave-safe bowl. Good with salt/pepper/butter)
  • Bell peppers (cut into strips, good with cream cheese)
  • Canned green beans (can be microwaved in microwave-safe bowl. Good with salt/pepper/butter)
  • Hummus (good with crackers or tortilla chips)
  • Salsa (good with tortilla chips)
  • Guacamole (good with tortilla chips)

Need it in something?

Can’t see it:

  • Hummus
  • salsa
  • Guacamole

Can see but disguised flavor (can usually be found store bought or done at home and use different veggies):

Texture problems:

Need it soft:

  • Hummus
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Cooked carrots
  • Avocados
  • Beans (personally I prefer black beans and canned baked beans)
  • Peas (make sure to cook well, great value brand has the softest peas I’ve tried)
  • Cooked broccoli (note: it does smell bad while cooking)
  • Cooked asparagus (note: also smells bad while cooking)
  • Cooked zucchini and squash (good together but can be eaten separate)
  • You can also puree most vegetables and eat with a spoon or use them as a dip

Needs to be crunchy:

  • Raw carrots
  • Raw celery
  • Raw bell peppers
  • Salad (remember you can put whatever you want in it! Even if that means no lettuce)
  • Most veggies are okay raw, and are usually very crunchy

Veggies google says stay crunchy after lightly cooking:

  • Snap peas
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Water chestnut
  • Bamboo shoots

Broad texture tips:

  • You can change textures by eating raw, cooking, chopping, pureeing, etc
  • You can separate different textures to use in different ways (ie using broccoli tops in a soup and eating the bottoms raw)

It also really helps to think about why you dislike a vegetable. I found that I am scared of green foods so I like to use those veggies for ingredients in things they are well hidden for. I’ve also learned that watching something while eating helps because then I’m not looking at the gross green things. When possible, I also like to get help hiding it (ie using cream of celery soup in my chicken and dumplings).

A series of pictures depicting issues for those who rely on wheelchairs.

A person with glasses sitting on a wheelchair stares at a door entrance located on a set of stairs.

Did you know… Some of us couldn’t even enter our own homes?

A crowd gathers in front of a bus, with a person on a wheelchair on the back, trying to get other people’s attention.

Please be mindful… Of those who can’t “push” their way around!

A woman with a hijab and glasses sits at a receptionist desk. A person on a wheelchair wearing a kippah is unable to reach the top to get her attention.

Simple things like reception desk height actually matters a lot!

A person on a wheelchair wearing a baseball hat backwards is unable to close the door to the restrooms. Despite this, the sign outside is marked as wheelchair accessible.

It is as if… Some doors aren’t meant to be closed!

A person on a wheelchair is frightened as their wheelchair goes down too fast down a ramp.

Did you know… That wheelchair ramps are steeper than recommended?

A man wearing a kippah is about to enter a temple, but covers his wheelchair wheels with a cover to keep the inside of the temple as clean as possible.

Wheelchairs go everywhere… But we can provide wheel covers for special places.

A picture of a parking lot Two cars are parked, one with most space to allow a disabled person to get on and off. A woman holding crutches is angered at a motorcycle parked in front of her car, which isn’t supposed to be there. A person on a wheelchair nearby notices her anger.

There’s a reason why… Certain space is allocated at disabled parking lots. And no, it’s not for your bike!

Two people stand in front of an automatic door. One is a child attempting to wave their hands to get it to open, and the other is a person on a wheelchair.

Notice that sometimes… Automatic door sensors are a bit short?

A bus is waiting at a stop. A person on a wheelchair is unable to get to the stop due to a steep ledge in front of them.

Are you aware that… Despite the upgraded buses, the bus stops need upgrading too?

A person on a wheelchair is using an ATM machine, which is placed at a lower position so they’re able to reach and use the machine comfortably.

In case you’re wondering… Why the new ATM machine designs are lower and slightly uncomfortable to use while standing up…
